INTRODUCING OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR -
CHRISTABEL CHEUNG by Gayle Geary, Board President
We are very excited to announce that after a rigorous search and recruiting process, we have hired Christabel Cheung as the Village’s new Executive Director. Cheung’s experience in the field of gerontology, combined with her enthusiastic community involvement and leadership, will help ensure the success of San Francisco Village as we grow from start-up to becoming an established organization in San Francisco. Cheung’s enthusiasm for SFV is clearly stated in her statement below. Throughout my professional career, education and community involvement, I have been deeply committed to advancing the field of aging. I welcome a return to that primary focus, and being part of an innovative movement towards aging-friendly communities. Most recently, Cheung was associate director at the Mental Health Association of San Francisco (MHA-SF). She was responsible for daily operations, contracts, financial management, program development, resource development and human resources for this nonprofit organization aimed at improving mental health through education, advocacy and group work. Prior to this, Cheung served as director of diversity at the American Society of Ageing where she led diversity programs and initiatives to reduce racial, ethnic, socio-economic and other disparities for older adults across the country. Cheung’s earlier associations include San Francisco’s Department of Aging and Adult Services and San Francisco General Hospital. Cheung continues to be an active community leader in San Francisco. She currently serves on the board of directors of Chinatown Community Development Center and Wicahpi Koyaka Tiospaye (“Wears the Star” in Lakota). Earlier she served on the board of Rebuilding Together San Francisco and the National Asian pacific American Women’s Forum. Cheung is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley where she earned a master’s degree in Social Welfare, Gerontology. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism. Cheung is a resident of San Francisco. We will be introducing Christabel to all our members in a series of small get-togethers in May. She will also be attending the Member’s Meeting on May 19 at Jean Phleger’s home in Woodside. We hope that many of you will join us in welcoming Christabel to San Francisco Village at this event.

Presidio Golf Club at Your Disposal By Mary Moore Gaines Did you know that I have a new social membership in the Presidio Golf Club, the private club overlooking the Golf Course along side Arguello Gate? I joined so that San Francisco Village and its members would have access to this lovely, historic club. The hospitality is excellent, atmosphere is cozy, the food very good. If you would like to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or plan a private party, just call me (415-387-7774) so that I can alert the Club. We’ll send you your bill at the end of the month. To learn more ‘google’ Presidio Golf Club (no tipping) One of our members has already used the club for a big birthday party for her husband and word has it that she is very satisfied. REFLECTION by Mary Moore Gaines
The theme of this month’s Newsletter, ‘Flowers,’ is, more broadly viewed, the earth. The following, a lovely musical offering, which I heard on Earth Day seems more than fitting as we celebrate flowers, the earth, our joy in it, our responsibility for it and the gift of this grand mystery of which we are all a part.
"Canticle of Brother Sun" from Missa Gaia Jim Scott and Paul Winter Words by Saint Francis of Assisi; adapted by Paul Winter All praise be yours thru Brother Sun, all praise be yours thru Sister Moon, by Mother Earth my Lord be praised, by Brother Mountain Sister Sea, thru Brother Wind and Brother Air, thru Sister Water Brother Fire, the Stars above give thanks to thee, all praise to those who live in peace. All praise be yours thru Brother Wolf, all praise be yours thru Sister Whale, by Nature's Song my Lord be praised by Brother Eagle Sister Loon, thru Brother Tiger, Sister Seal thru Sister Flower Brother Tree, let Creatures all give thanks to thee, All praise to those who live in peace. Ask of the beasts and they shall teach you the beauty of the earth, ask of the trees and they shall teach you the beauty of the earth, ask of the flowers and they shall teach you the beauty of the earth, ask of the winds and they shall teach you're the beauty of the earth. Brother Sun, Sister Moon, for the beauty of the earth sin, Oh sing today. Of the skies and of our birth sin, oh sing always. Nature human and divine all around us lies. Lord of all to thee we raise grateful hymns of praise.
