Letter from the Board President
Dear Villagers,
We are moving into the fourth quarter of 2011 with great momentum. In addition to preparing for our inaugural fund-raising event, Discovered Treasures©, we have been active on the fund raising front, getting ready for our first volunteer training, and developing new and relevant programs for our members.
We are particularly pleased and excited about receiving a major grant from the Archstone Foundation, a grant-making organization committed to preparing society for the growing needs of an aging population. Eleven Archstone grants have been awarded throughout California for the purpose of Creating Aging Friendly Communities through the Expansion of Villages. Three grants are for villages in northern California, including San Francisco Village (SFV), Ashby Village in Berkeley, and Avenidas Village in Palo Alto.

Arthur Wallace – Volunteer of the Month
By Keyatta Shade

Since October 2010, Arthur Wallace has worked both as a volunteer at San Francisco Village, and as a part-time temporary staff member, during which time he provided support to our administrative, membership, and volunteer programs.
Arthur is delightful to work with. He is a terrific colleague with a creative spirit, strong sense of humor, and a willingness to take on multiple tasks with little supervision. In addition, Arthur possesses strong skills in dealing with people from all walks of life, and a deep understanding of the needs of our aging population.

Join Us for Discovered Treasures on November 4th
By Eva Auchincloss, Event Chair
We are very excited, as the date of our inaugural fundraising event, Discovered Treasures, is getting closer. Invitations are in the mail and we encourage you to attend. We are particularly pleased that it is being held at the St. Francis Yacht Club, which has easy parking and wheel chair accessibility. Furthermore, if you don't drive and need transportation, please call the office and they will try to arrange for you to be picked up.
We have an incredible selection of items for both our silent and live auctions. We want to thank everyone for their generosity and enthusiasm in donating vacations, sailing on the Bay, tickets to events, restaurant opporunities, a wide assortment of collectibles, and so much more. We are especially fortunate to have so many well-known local artists donate their works. You will be able to view and even bid on the items on our website beginning October 7.
I particularly want to thank the event committee for all their creativity and hard work in making Discovered Treasures a reality – Carolyn (Babs) Barber, Marilyn Campbell, Katie Cardinal, Aurèle Carlat, Helen DeMarco, Mary Ann Faris, Judith Fast, Mary Moore Gaines, Gayle Geary, Kris Getz, Margaret Johnson, Laura Kuo, Jeanne Lacy, Judy Langley, Don Langley, Claudia Lewis, Carol Livingston, Dawn Ming, Carolyn Morris, Jean Phleger, Hillary Polednik, Maggie Ralston, Marsha Robertson, Barbara Stevens, Glady Thacher, and Jackie Young.

Things That Matter As We Age
Glady Thacher and Sarah Goldman invite you to a new beginning of Things That Matter As We Age. This theme has resonated with many members. However, engaging with this broad subject in ways that are both specific and intriguing, has been a challenge. As a result, Glady and Sarah are proposing a series of topics that relate to aging in specific areas. We are calling the first of these "Being a Parent and Being Parented." The idea is that as we age and face changes of one sort or another, we need the advice and support of others in dealing with them. Quite often these others are our adult children, or younger friends, who live nearby or at a distance. No doubt some of you have had to deal with your own parents as their health declined and know first hand what that process was like for you. Now, you want to deal with your own changing needs in different ways.

Bone Health Event
San Francisco Village will be scheduling an event with the Foundation for Osteoporosis Research and Education (FORE) in mid November. The event will combine an informative lecture with a bone scan to determine bone density for everyone who wants to participate. We encourage both men and women to attend as osteoporosis does not only effect women. According to FORE, "Men can experience significant bone loss as they age, and this can lead to osteoporosis."
This event will be free to all members.
To learn more about FORE, please visit their website: http://www.fore.org/
Food & Wine: A New Feature
We would like to invite SFV members to share favorite recipes and food experiences with us, and perhaps include any anecdotes (or photos) about what made that recipe special. Who knows? We may end up with an SFV Cookbook!
Beginning this month is a recipe and photo submitted by Gayle Geary. "I love roast chicken as does my family and this recipe is not only easy and fast but the chicken is moist and delicious."
LEMON CHICKEN*
1 roasting chicken (4-5 pounds)
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
Olive oil (approx. 2 tablespoons)
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 lemons, quartered
2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
Optional—French baguette or round loaf of good quality bread, cut into ¾ inch cubes (approx. 6 cups)
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Toss onion slices with olive oil in a small roasting pan; set aside. Remove giblets from the chicken, and discard excess fat and pinfeathers. Rinse chicken well, inside and out, and dry with a paper towel. Put lemons inside cavity of chicken and brush skin with melted butter. Tie legs together with kitchen twine, and place chicken on rack in roasting pan. Roast uncovered for 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 hours, or until juices run clear when you make a cut between the leg and thigh. When chicken is done, cover with foil and allow it to rest for 15 minutes.
Note—if onions burn slightly, don’t worry. The flavor is delicious.

My husband, Michael, in France holding a chicken, exclaiming, " Mon Dieu, un poulet avec une tête!"
